Balloons carrying thousands of packs of cigarettes have disrupted flights in Lithuania, as Vilnius Airport was required to halt operations for hours when multiple of them floated into the country's airspace.
Flight Disruptions
The airport closure led to the cancellation of 30 flights affecting six thousand travelers, with airport representatives alerting that delays might continue throughout Monday.
National Security Measures
Officials confirmed that 25 meteorological balloons were observed crossing into Lithuania from the adjacent country of Belarus, with a pair of them ending up precisely above the airport's airspace.
As many as 14 of the weather balloons deployed throughout the weekend floated over the capital region, which is situated near Lithuania's primary metropolis and adjacent to the frontier with Belarus.
Contraband Recovery
No fewer than 11 balloons carrying 18,000 packs of illegal tobacco products have been collected so far, though additional discoveries are expected, according to law enforcement authorities.
Cross-Border Contraband Trend
Although causing problems, authorities noted that "Meteorological equipment transporting smuggled items - Belarusian smoking products - are common occurrences in the Baltic region and Poland."
So far this year, 544 balloons have been recorded entering Lithuania from Belarus, while approximately 966 had been noted during the prior year.
Regional Consequences
At the same time, the border area of Poland, which also borders Belarus, has recorded more than one hundred incidents in which contraband was flown from its border nation utilizing the meteorological equipment.
Criminal Methodology
Regarding inquiries concerning why criminal organizations employ a method that is highly susceptible to weather conditions rather than simpler to operate drones, officials clarified that "Weather devices are simple mechanisms used by illegal traders - they are more economical than drones for carrying smoking materials from Belarus."
Security Service Goals
Authorities continued that "The objective of our agencies is to seize the largest possible volumes of smuggled items and to apprehend coordinators and perpetrators so that such operations become economically unsustainable and present no risk to commercial air travel."
International Concerns
The recent incidents occur during a period of heightened tension in Europe following multiple unmanned aircraft violations that have resulted in flight interruptions across the continent.
Parallel situations in nearby states have caused EU officials to fast-track conversations about improving airspace protection throughout the region.
